Overnight stays at the zoo
The Baumhaushotel Zoo Schwerin is an extraordinary place to stay: a tree house reminiscent of Alexander von Humboldt’s historic explorer’s hut. The rustic wooden structure is located in the middle of the zoo, surrounded by capuchin monkeys, coatis and other animals.
You can reach the tree house via wooden steps. The lettering “A. v. Humboldt” is emblazoned on the door. Inside, rustic furniture, lamps, curtains and various accessories create a cozy atmosphere. A picture of the famous explorer on the wall and loving details give the impression that he could return at any time.
In the morning, you won’t be woken up by an alarm clock, but by the calls of peacocks, the cries of monkeys, or the roar of lions. You can watch the animals from every window, even from the bathroom. You can find an up-to-date zoo map here.

The tree house offers 40 square meters of space for up to 6 people. There are three sleeping alcoves spread over two levels:
- A room for bookworms
- A children’s room with dolls and teddies
- The “dovecote” for couples

The small kitchen on the second floor has a hob, fridge, kettle and toaster. The adjoining dining area invites you to eat together. The bathroom with shower and WC is located directly in the tree house.
A steep staircase leads up to the roof terrace. There you can look up at the starry sky and listen to the creaking of the wood. After dark, you can also spot nocturnal animals such as badgers and raccoons.
The research trail
There is a walkway around the tree house – the explorer trail. At four interactive stations, you can learn interesting facts about the flora and fauna of South America, tropical rainforests and the work of Alexander von Humboldt. The footbridge also provides barrier-free access to the “Humboldt House” with its macaws, anteaters, sloths and marmosets.
Activities
You can visit the zoo from opening until closing. Afterwards, you can retire to the tree house and continue watching the animals from the terrace. As a special experience, you can book an evening safari. The 90-minute tour offers the opportunity to experience nocturnal animals such as wolves and red dogs at feeding time. The cost is 60 euros per group.
If you fancy a change, the Schwerin climbing park is in the immediate vicinity.

Check-in is possible at 12:00 or 16:00. The tree house must be vacated by 10:00 am. Pets are not allowed.

Staying in the treehouse was absolutely unique. We received a very warm welcome and had the opportunity to visit the zoo free of charge on both our arrival and departure days. Parking was included. The house is lovingly furnished, and attention has been paid to every detail. The furnishings are custom-made, and everything is spotlessly clean. While brushing your teeth in the bathroom, you can watch the animals through a window, and you also have a view of everything from the third bedroom, the dovecote. Nighttime lion roars are included! A highlight for us was sitting on the balcony after the zoo closed, watching and listening to the animals. The small kitchenette is perfectly adequate for preparing meals. However, the delivery service should also be familiar with the address. We also took an evening stroll along Lake Schwerin, so you can easily leave the grounds independently, even after the zoo has closed. A stay for two people isn't exactly cheap, but in principle, there's sleeping space for six people, so it's easy to share with friends. We wholeheartedly recommend it.
The house is charmingly furnished. Simple but lovely. We had a wonderful time during our girls' weekend. With an evening tour. So cool!
Schwerin Zoo was an experience. Not like going to the Copenhagen Zoo. Here the emphasis is on the surroundings. There is a lot of water here, just like the rest of Schwerin. The lions are the big attraction. They have a big building. As a thank you, one of the lions just had a cub. As an experienced zoo visitor, I would place Schwerin Zoo at the top because of the beautiful surroundings
We had a fantastic weekend at Schwerin Zoo. A particular highlight was our overnight stay in the treehouse. It was furnished with so much love and attention to detail; nothing was lacking. We highly recommend it. Many thanks to all the zoo staff!
