Altenberg Fairy Tale Forest in the Bergisches Land

Description

Altenberg Fairy Tale Forest in Odenthal

In Altenberg Fairy Tale Forest, the characters from the Brothers Grimm have been telling their stories for over 90 years. The park is in the Bergisches Land near Odenthal, right by Altenberg Cathedral and close to Cologne. In 18 little forest cottages, moving figures are waiting to come to life at the push of a button.

From the Frog Prince to Rumpelstiltskin

As you walk through the woods, you’ll meet the Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, and Rumpelstiltskin. Between the cottages there’s a playground for little adventurers. The animal residents are happy to have visitors too: goats, sheep, rabbits, and donkeys can be petted and, in some cases, fed. Seating areas along the path are perfect for a picnic—you’re welcome to bring your own food. Your dog is also welcome in the park on a leash.

In the Fairy Tale Forest Café, you can watch the “Dancing Fountains” on the hour. For groups of ten or more, the Bergische coffee table is served there by reservation. The Fairy Tale Forest is open year-round; it’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. During school holidays and public holidays, it’s open even then. Admission is card payment only. Throughout the year there are events such as the Easter rally, the Fairy Tale Forest Festival during the summer holidays, the Spooky Days in autumn, and the Winter Magic.

It was perfect for family with small children. For our 6 years old son it was exciting adventure fairytale forest. He enjoyed it very much. Listening to the story, and saw the set up house in every fairytale section. We went here during Easter holiday, and they make some quiz questionnaire programs that the kids need to filled it out. This quiz program was really good for our 10 and 13 years old kids. It keep them busy, otherwise it was too boring for them. The river between the parking place and the fairytale forest was the most exciting part and the highlight for our 3 kids. It was relaxing sound of the river and beautiful views of the forest. It was good therapy and stress relief for the kids. They get the fresh air and enjoying the nature with some fantasy adventures.

It’s like stepping into a real-life fairy tale! The Märchenwald (Fantasy Forest) is beautifully designed, full of charming little details and whimsical decorations that bring classic fairy tales to life. It’s a magical walk through the most famous fairy tales — perfect for children, but enjoyable for adults too! Brings the childhood memories back! Along the path, you’ll find scenes from well-known stories, lovingly recreated with animated figures, narration, and enchanting scenery. There are animals such as rabbits, goats, donkeys. You can get a small pack of animal food for 2 euros at the entrance. There’s the possibility to bring children’s carriers and wagons, which makes the visit easier for families with small kids. Throughout the park, there are benches to rest, along with bins and cute themed decorations that maintain the fairy tale atmosphere. Moreover, there’s a small restaurant and also a hotel for the visitors from far distance. A small playing ground for a short break for kids, and also a beverage vending machine. We visited on a weekend, and to our surprise, there was no wait for tickets and entrance at all — we got our tickets right away and could start our adventure with awe immediately.

A beautiful, storybook-like place in nature. The kids were fascinated from start to finish. There was plenty of parking available, even though it’s paid, but the price is reasonable. The restaurant doesn’t offer a wide selection, but the coffee was good. A charming spot for a relaxing family outing.
