What makes climbing forests in Germany so special?

Climbing forests in Germany are more than just a leisure activity – they are places of challenge, courage and personal development. In a natural forest environment, you will find various courses with different levels of difficulty, ranging from balance exercises to rope slides. The special thing about it: you are always securely connected to a harness system, but can still leave your comfort zone and gain new experiences. The atmosphere in a climbing forest is great. Surrounded by trees and fresh air, you quickly forget the stress of everyday life and concentrate fully on the task in front of you.

Who are climbing forests suitable for?

The beauty of climbing forests is their versatility. Families with children aged 6 and over will find their place here, as will teenage groups looking for an adrenaline rush. Adults like to use these climbing parks for team-building events or as a sporting challenge at the weekend.

For children between the ages of 6 and 12, there are usually special children’s courses at a lower height that are perfectly suited to their height and abilities. Teenagers and adults can try their hand at the more difficult courses, which require real skill and overcoming. It doesn’t matter whether you are an active athlete or rarely climb – the different levels of difficulty make climbing forests accessible to practically everyone.

Safety and equipment at a glance

Safety is the top priority in every climbing forest. Before you venture into the heights, you will receive a detailed briefing on safety technology. Modern harness systems, consisting of a climbing harness and special safety ropes with carabiners, ensure that you are protected at all times – even if you lose your grip.

Practical tips for your visit to the climbing forest

Before the visit

Booking and reservation

Advance booking is recommended at most climbing walls, especially at weekends and during vacation periods. Many climbing forests in Germany offer online booking systems that you can use to reserve your appointment from the comfort of your own home. When booking, you usually enter the number of people and the desired date. Some climbing parks grant early booking discounts or offer special group rates for a certain number of participants.

Plan enough time for your visit – depending on the course selection and level of experience, you should allow at least 2-3 hours. Many climbing walls have different time slots in which new groups start. Check the opening times in advance, as these can vary depending on the season and weather.

What you should bring with you

You don’t need to bring much for a successful day in the climbing forest. Your most important companions are a good mood and some courage for new challenges. A small rucksack with snacks and plenty of water is recommended, as climbing can be quite strenuous. Although many facilities have their own kiosks or restaurants, it is usually cheaper to bring your own food.

Think about sun protection if you are spending a long time outside. Sunscreen and possibly a cap or hat will protect you from UV radiation. If the weather is uncertain, you should have a light rain jacket with you – many climbing forests in Germany open in light rain.

Clothing and equipment

The right clothing will make your visit to the climbing forest much more enjoyable. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes with good support – sneakers are best. Sandals or flip-flops are not permitted in most facilities as they offer too little protection.

Your clothing should be comfortable and not too loose. Long pants protect your legs from scratches on ropes and branches. Avoid loose clothing that could get caught in the ropes. Please also leave jewelry such as necklaces or large earrings at home. You will be provided with all safety equipment on site. You usually have to bring your own gloves, but in my opinion they are recommended.

Take safety briefing seriously

Before you set off, you will receive a detailed safety briefing. An experienced instructor will explain the safety system, show you how to use the equipment correctly and demonstrate the most important climbing techniques. Listen carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear. It is important that you understand how it works and know how to behave correctly. After the briefing, you can usually try out the system on a low practice course.

Course selection according to difficulty

Climbing forests offer various courses with different levels of difficulty. These are usually color-coded or marked with symbols. As a beginner, be sure to start with an easy course, even if it seems too easy at first glance. Climbing at height is a completely different experience to climbing on the ground.

The difficulty levels are usually based on the height of the course and the complexity of the obstacles. Green or blue courses are often suitable for beginners, while red or black routes are real challenges. Climb slowly and listen to your gut feeling – it is completely normal that not every course suits you.

Tips for beginners and advanced users

For beginners: Take your time and don’t put yourself under pressure. Everyone has their own pace and it’s perfectly fine if you take longer or skip a course. Concentrate on your movements and remember: you are safely secured. Breathe calmly and evenly, especially if you get nervous.

For advanced climbers: Even as an experienced climber, you should observe the safety rules and not get overconfident. Take the opportunity to try out new techniques or try your hand at more difficult courses.

Special target groups

Climbing forests for families with children

Families will find ideal conditions in most climbing forests. Special children’s courses at lower heights allow even the youngest children from the age of 6 to gain their first climbing experience. These courses are designed so that children can tackle them independently while their parents watch and encourage them from the ground.

Many facilities also have family courses that parents and children can climb together. This boosts children’s confidence and makes the experience unforgettable for the whole family. Plan a little extra time for your visit with children and bring a change of clothes if necessary.

Team building and corporate events

Climbing forests in Germany are ideal locations for team-building events and company outings. Overcoming obstacles together strengthens team cohesion and trust. Many facilities offer special programs for groups that are accompanied by experienced trainers.

These programs can be tailored specifically to the needs of your team. In addition to pure climbing, there are often also cooperation tasks and trust exercises. For larger groups, it is worth making an early inquiry, as special group discounts may be available.

Children’s birthday parties in the climbing forest

A children’s birthday party in a climbing forest is a very special experience. Most facilities offer special birthday packages that include climbing, food and sometimes even small gifts for the birthday child. The group is usually accompanied by an experienced supervisor who takes special care of the children.

When planning, make sure that all invited children meet the minimum requirements. Most climbing walls have a minimum age of 6 years and may also have minimum sizes for certain courses. Booking well in advance is particularly important for children’s birthday parties, as these dates are very popular.

FAQ about climbing forests in Germany

What is the difference between a climbing forest and a high ropes course?

The terms are often used interchangeably. A climbing forest is usually located in a natural forest environment between real trees, while a high ropes course is built on artificial poles or towers. Functionally, both are very similar. You can find more information here.

Are there any weight or size restrictions?

Yes, most climbing walls in Germany have a minimum weight of around 40 kg and a maximum weight of between 120-130 kg. Some courses also have minimum heights of 1.40 m or 1.50 m. You can find the exact values on the respective website of the climbing forest.

What happens if I get stuck on a course?

Every climbing forest has trained staff to help you in case of difficulties. There are always emergency exits and the option to leave a course without completing it. You are never on your own at any time.

Can I climb with goggles?

Yes, that’s not a problem. It is best to use a goggle strap so that the goggles cannot fall off. Contact lenses are often more practical when climbing.

Can I wear jewelry?

Avoid loose jewelry such as necklaces or large earrings, as they can get caught in the ropes. You usually have to take such items off during the safety briefing at the latest. There are usually lockers on site for this purpose. Rings are usually okay, but should not be too loose.

What do I do when others are faster?

Everyone has their own pace – that’s completely normal. Let others overtake you between the individual stations on the platforms and climb at your own pace.

Can pregnant women go to the climbing forest?

Pregnant women are not advised to climb as they may fall into the harness. Most facilities do not allow pregnant women to participate.
